3/6/2007

Salem, NY - Farm Team Cycling of Cambridge, NY and the organizers of the 2007 Battenkill-Roubaix Cycling Race (www.battenkillroubaix.com) are proud to announce the 2007 Battenkill-Roubaix as the largest Pro/Am cycling race in the Northeast, and is already the fastest-growing Pro/Am race in the United States.  With more than 5 weeks of open registration remaining, more than 780 racers from 18 US States and Canada have already registered.   Nearly 1000 racers are expected by race day on April 14.  Major sponsors include Trade Manage Capital, Jamis Bicycles, Glens Falls Hospital, Reynolds Real Estate of Greenwich, and Alan Brown Realty of Salem.

The organizers are also proud to announce the addition of the Battenkill-Roubaix Race Expo as part of this year's event in Salem, NY.  The Race Expo will feature food, local artisans, and live entertainment at the First Presbyterian Church adjacent to the finish line on West Broadway in Salem.  Hosted & organized by the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, the Race Expo will be held from 12-5 PM.  Interested vendors should contact the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce at 518-854-7331 or expo@battenkillroubaix.com.  Space is limited.

In addition to this year's race-day activities, the organizers have added the Battenkill-Roubaix Recovery Ride & Sunday Brunch on Sunday, April 15 at 8:30 AM from the Bancroft Salem Library on Main Street, Salem.  Riders can enjoy a 20-30 mile recreational ride that'll explore more of the great bicycle riding in the Battenkill Valley of Upstate New York.  Riders will return to the Salem Library by 10 to a full brunch and a live broadcast of the Paris-Roubaix professional race from FranceThe cost is $20 per person ($25 at the door) for a fully-supported ride, great scenery, great food, great company, and great cycling action from France.  The ride is open to racers and non-racers.  Pre-register at www.bikereg.com

Finally, the organizers of the race are also proud to announce a partnership with the Towns & Villages of the Battenkill Valley (TVOBV)- a regional tourism & commerce promotional organization - in a cross-marketing relationship aimed at growing both the general interest in the race by the public and growing the businesses and organizations interested in the race's demographics.  "By my estimation, the Battenkill Roubaix will bring in excess of 4,000-5000 people to our region during a historically slow period.  The opportunities presented to the Battenkill Valley by this race are tremendous", said TVOBV founder Christine Hoffer of the Rice Mansion Inn in Cambridge.  "Cycling in our region is growing.  Because of this growth, the TVOBV is currently working on other cycling events including the Maple Sugar Cycling Tour in March as a prelude to the excitement expected for the Battenkill-Roubaix in April.  Watch our website -www.visitbattenkillvalley.com - for many more exciting events like this!"

It's a logical step for the race's growth", said Race Promoter Dieter Drake of Cambridge.  "In order to bring more racers and spectators into the area for the event, we needed a more comprehensive marketing approach.  The TVOBV has exactly the right focus for the race and for cycling in the region to grow.  With the folks at the Salem Chamber doing such a great job with the new Race Expo this year, it was time to expand the scope.  With their assistance, this race could really springboard into something even larger, perhaps even a Pro Tour Race similar to the Tour of California or the Tour de Georgia.  The growing interest in the Battenkill-Roubaix is amazing.  I never expected this much excitement for it,"  Drake said.

Volunteers are needed for this year's race.  Pace car drivers and race marshals are especially needed to ensure the race is safe for racers and for spectators.  Please contact Volunteer Coordinator Christine Hoffer at 518-677-5741 or volunteers@battenkillroubaix.com for details.  The race will again benefit the public libraries of Southern Washington County (Salem, Cambridge, Easton, and Greenwich) and Farm Team Cycling - a local bicycle racing club for area youth.  All race information can be found at www.battenkillroubaix.com.
