Recent Volunteer Correspondences
January 26, 2007
Hello from the Battenkill-Roubaix Cycling Race!
Many of you have responded indicating that you're able once gain to volunteer for this race on April 14. Thanks! The race's scope is growing every day and I'm happy to report that more than 650 racers are currently registered from 17 states and Canada! At this rate, nearly 1,000 racers will be racing on this epic day of cycling for Southern Washington County, NY.
There is a pressing need to gather enough pace car drivers for this year's race. I have a goal to gather enough support to have 25 drivers ready to go by race day. Information and confirmation for these must be collected well in-advance of race day, however. If you have an interest in driving a pace car or wheel van and you haven't contacted me yet, please let me know. All race related-expenses are paid - gas, food, refreshments, etc.). If you otherwise would like to help out as a race marshal, please contact me. The race has become one of the most enjoyable days of cycling in the Northeast - both on and off the bike! As in the previous 2 editions, the race benefits the public libraries of Southern Washington County and Farm Team Cycling - a local cycling club for kids (www.farmteamcycling.org)
Some volunteer updates:
We're working on hosting volunteer functions both pre and post-race so that we can get together, enjoy each other's company, and talk about the race. More information is coming.
A race expo is planed for the finish area that will feature food & refreshments, vendors, sponsors, and perhaps live entertainment.
A Sunday recreational ride in Salem is possibly in the works to tour portions of the course. Details to follow.
All current race-related information can be found at www.battenkillroubaix.com
Thanks!

Subject: 2007 Battenkill-Roubaix - April 14, 2007 - Salem, NY
Hello Fellow Cycling Fans!
You're receiving this e-mail because you were kind enough to volunteer for one of my nutty cycling races in the past! Well, I can't help myself, so…2007 is upon us and that means I am slowly generating a list of potential volunteers (victims?) for the 2007 Battenkill-Roubaix. This year's race will again benefit the public libraries of Southern Washington County and Farm Team Cycling - a local cycling club for juniors (see www.farmteamcycling.org). Last year we donated more than $5000 to the libraries and civic groups in Southern Washington County as a result of this race and others which you participated in. On behalf of Farm Team, THANK YOU!
This year's B-R will be bigger than ever. In just 2 weeks of open registration, more than 550 racers have registered from all over the U.S. and Canada! (we had a total of 550 in 2006). At this rate, the race will be host to more than 900 racers this year before it closes out completely, making it one of the largest Pro/Am cycling races in the country! That's a lot of racers. That's also a lot of volunteers!
Because it's been so successful, the race will be much the same as in the 2 previous editions; it'll have the same dirt roads, and the same passes through the villages of Salem, Cambridge, and Greenwich. The one major change is that the elite-level men will be racing an extra 20 miles of the grueling backcountry roads that make this race such a charm for hundreds. While their extra 20 mile 'bonus' is mostly on low-traveled area roads, the challenge remains to find a few more enthusiastic folks to man the few extra corners and intersections to ensure their safe passage.
So the challenge is on. We topped 100 very energetic volunteers last year. We'll need slightly more this year. So why not? As always, all volunteers will receive food & drink, race materials including signs, radios, those bright orange vests (some of questionable history), race t-shirts, instructions, maps, good cheer, and any other items that are necessary for your particular missions. I'll probably throw in commemorative cowbells for all this year as so many racers enjoyed them last year.
Many folks have already offered to help again. Thank you! For everyone else, please consider taking part again in a great event for the region, and consider perhaps bringing a friend. I think the race has had a positive impact on the sport of cycling and the region. I know it's had a very great impact on the public libraries and also the lives of young area kids showing an interest in the sport. With your help, we'll continue that tradition.
Many thanks,
Dieter
